Choice-based art, encourages students to make meaningful decisions about their work. Third-Fifth grade students will have opportunities to choose a prompt from a general theme (often related to the school-wide Wit and Wisdom Curriculum), materials, and process. They practice independence, develop voice and agency, and build artistic habits such as persistence, observation, reflection, and collaboration. The teacher shifts from project director to studio facilitator, guiding decision-making, offering mini-lessons, and supporting creative risk-taking.
Third-Fifth Grade students will learn about how to use materials at each art center in structured mini-studio sprints in a gradual release throughout the year. They may learn about different media such as drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking, and fibers. At each center students review visual guides, plan their work, create independently while receiving teacher support, and reflect and share their choices. This model balances structure with freedom, while ensuring personal meaning and authentic creativity. Second grade will also have opportunities for student choice sprinkled throughout the year using prompts connected to Wit & Wisdom and focusing on one art medium at a time.
